Special Field Orders No. 15, issued by General Sherman in 1865, promised formerly enslaved Black families 40 acres of land along the southeastern U.S. coast, inspiring the phrase “forty acres and a mule.” This order symbolized a step toward Black economic independence but was revoked later that year by President Andrew Johnson, leaving many families dispossessed. Today, it remains a powerful symbol in Black culture and American history of both the possibilities and betrayals of Reconstruction-era promises.
